bassinbrooksy disclaimer: before i get some aggrevating hippy comment about how they are protected . the catch was reported to NOAA and i emailed them the pics and catch info and was thanked for the info. cought this on my striper gear while drifting a dead mackerel thrwe the mouth of the merrimack . ive never seen anything run so fast in my life and after almost getting spooled twice we backed up the boat so i could gain some line back. i thought i had a small shark til i finally saw it was a sturgeon about 10 feet from the boat at which point i chose to remove the hook (foul hooked near the tail) and get a quick measurement and a few pics rather than cut the line. the fish was NEVER removed from the water, was at the side of the boat for maybe 90 seconds and swam away on its own just fine.

grabbass That's awesome. Great catch and it sounds like it was a memorable fight. I would love to catch one. Was it near the mouth of the river, flats, or inland?

bassinbrooksy grabass thanks it was as intense a fight as i will ever feel especially cause it was foul hooked in the tail , so basically take a 60 lb 5 foot long powerhouse of a fish and try to fight it with no control over its head. it was playing me lol.. and it was right off the jeti near the green bucket lol.. enoqueira the disclaimer was mostly to keep the inevitable " you know those are protected species and your not supposed to touch em right?" comments lol. literally by the time i saw what it was it was 10 feet from the boat so i figured it was the catch of a lifetime and i could see the hook so lets get it against the boat remove the hook get some proof (pics and vid lol) then revive it.
