The One That Got Away

My friend and I caught a few shiners and headed out to the local golf course pond. We did not have much luck with shiners so we were forced to keep one over 8 inches. The pond we fished was pretty small and I didn't think any fish would eat it. i threw the shiner out there with my bait caster and waited patiently. No longer than 5 minutes later my bobber was popping at the top of the water. A few seconds later the bobber went straight under. I picked up my pole and gave whatever was at the end of my line some extra line to run with so it could swallow the massive shiner. I decided it was time to set the hook so i reeled up the slack and proceeded to set the hook. As i set the hook my rod snapped in half!!! I couldn't believe it...ive never seen anything like that before. I looked at my friend in dis belief. I called that the one that got away.

  • redneck angler, thats all I've been doing the last few years! just watching the boils at the top itching to fish that pond

  • Hey kjud29, keep the posts coming. Does a fishing rod count as one of the 14 clubs in your bag? There are some huge lunkers lurking in golf ponds! The other year at the TPC River Highlands I was spending more time watching the fish breaking the surface on 17 than the players on the course.

  • not my intent bud sorry if you took it that way just offering possabilitys sence you yourself never got a look at it ...but we all have the 1 that got away tails and non of us know for sure ....but thanks for shareing the day

  • I'd have to agree with nwdarkcloud. Sounds like a snapper.

  • It's your story kjub29, so you can make the fish as big as you want! :)

  • dont forget the turtle possabilty ...big 1s are like hookin a engine block they dont budge ..so unless you saw a fin or splash we can only guess....

  • angryjohn: i feel like the fish was larger because after only a few seconds, the bobber dove straight under. I've never seen a fish that could inhale a bait that big like it did
